Tabari

Tafseer of The Iron · Al-Hadid · 57:15

So today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination.

The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says, reporting the words of the believers to the people of hypocrisy, after the distinction has been made between them on the Day of Resurrection: (On this Day) O hypocrites (no ransom shall be accepted from you) — He means: compensation and substitution. He says: that shall not be accepted from you as a substitute for your punishment and your torment, such that it would save you from the chastisement (ʿadhāb) of Allah. (Nor from those who disbelieved) — He says: and likewise the ransom shall not be accepted from those who disbelieved.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of those who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: (On this Day no ransom shall be accepted from you, nor from those who disbelieved): He means the hypocrites, and likewise not from those who disbelieved.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: (On this Day it shall not be accepted from you): from the hypocrites, (nor from those who disbelieved): along with you. (Your abode is the Fire).

The reciters differed in the reading of His word: (On this Day no ransom shall be accepted from you); most of the reciters read it with the yāʾ (yuʾkhadh), while Abū Jaʿfar the reciter read it with the tāʾ.

And the more correct of the two readings is the yāʾ, even though the other is permissible.

And His word: (Your abode is the Fire) — He says: your abode and your dwelling place which you shall inhabit on the Day of Resurrection is the Fire.

And His word: (It is your nearest one) — He says: the Fire is the most fitting for you.

And His word: (And it is an evil destination) — He says: and evil is the destination of whoever goes to the Fire.
