The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: أَفَبِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ ("Is it then this tiding that you treat with disdain?") (81)
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: Do you then dissemble, O people, with regard to this Qurʾān, whose tiding I have told you and whose matter I have set forth to you, [uttering] soft words toward those who deny it, as a support from you to them in denying it and in unbelief?
The exegetes have differed concerning its explanation. Some of them said concerning it something in line with our statement about it.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the saying of Allah: أَفَبِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ ("Do you then dissemble with regard to this tiding?"), he said: you wish to support them therein and to incline toward them.
And others said: No, its meaning is: Do you then deny this tiding?
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, His saying: أَفَبِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ ("Do you then dissemble with regard to this tiding?"), he says: denying, not believing.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His saying: أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ ("you dissemble"), he says: denying.
