And His word wanneer de aarde hevig wordt geschud (56:4) — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: when the earth is made to quake and is violently shaken. This is derived from their expression "the arrow trembles in the target," in the sense of: it shakes and trembles.

And in the manner of what we have said about it, the people of interpretation have spoken.

    * Mention of those who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word wanneer de aarde hevig wordt geschud, he says: it is made to quake.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah wanneer de aarde hevig wordt geschud, he said: it is made to quake.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word wanneer de aarde hevig wordt geschud, he says: it is made to quake with a quaking.
