And His word: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache") means: their heads do not get a headache from drinking it, such that they would become drunk.

And as for what we have said about that, so have the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) said.

    * Mention of who said that:

Ismāʿīl ibn Mūsā al-Suddī related to me, saying: Sharīk informed us, on the authority of Sālim, on the authority of Saʿīd, concerning His word: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache"), he said: their heads do not get a headache.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache"): there is no headache attached to it.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Sulaymān related to us, saying: Abū Hilāl related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache"), he said: their heads do not get a headache.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache"), he says: their heads do not get a headache.

It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His word: لا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا ("from which they get no headache"): he means a headache.

And His word: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and they are not exhausted / their reason is not befogged") — the Qurʾān reciters differ over its reading. Most of the reciters of Medina and Basra read it as يُنـزفُونَ with a fatḥa on the zāy, and they interpreted that as: their reason is not befogged. Most of the reciters of Kūfa read it as لا يُنـزفُونَ with a kasra on the zāy, with the meaning: and their drink does not run out.

The correct ruling on this, in my view, is that they are two well-known readings, both of which are sound in meaning; with whichever of the two the reciter recites, by it he hits upon the correct one.

And the people of interpretation differ over its interpretation in the same manner in which the reciters differ over it. We have already mentioned their differing positions on that, and set out the correct ruling on it in Sūrat al-Ṣāffāt, so that that excuses us from repetition in this place. Nevertheless, we shall mention the position of some of them in this place, so that no one would suppose that its meaning in this place differs from the meaning there.

    * Mention of the position of whoever among them said: the meaning is that their reason is not befogged:

Ismāʿīl ibn Mūsā related to us, saying: Sharīk informed us, on the authority of Sālim, on the authority of Saʿīd: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"), he said: their reason is not befogged.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Manṣūr, on the authority of Mujāhid: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"), he said: their reason is not befogged.

And Ibn Ḥumayd related to us again, and he said: and their reason is not lost.

It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His word: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"): their reason is not befogged.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"), he said: no one is overcome by his reason.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, concerning His word: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"), he said: no one is overcome in his reason.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Sulaymān related to us, saying: Abū Hilāl related to us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning the word of Allah: وَلا يُنـزفُونَ ("and their reason is not befogged"), he said: their reason is not overcome.
