Tafseer of The Beneficent · Ar-Rahmaan · 55:74
Untouched before them by man or jinni -
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
His statement: لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلا جَانٌّ ("No human nor jinn has touched them before them") — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: no human nor jinn has touched them before them through sexual intercourse by which he caused them to bleed.
The reciters of the cities have read لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ ("has touched them") with a kasra on the mīm, both in this place and in the place before it. Al-Kisāʾī, however, used to read one of the two with a kasra and the other with a ḍamma.
The correct view regarding the recitation thereof is that upon which the reciters of the cities rely, for that is the eloquent language and the well-known speech from the language of the Arabs.
