His statement: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs") — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: in these two gardens which are below the two gardens that are appointed for him who feared the standing before his Lord, there are two gushing springs, that is to say: spouting springs.

The exegetes differ concerning that with which the two springs spout forth. Some of them said: they spout forth with water.

    * Mention of who said that:

Hannād ibn al-Sarī related to us, saying: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ related to us, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning His statement: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs"), he said: they spout forth with water.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("two gushing"), he said: they spout forth with water.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs"), he says: they spout forth with water.

Others said: no, the meaning of it is that the two springs are overflowing.

    * Mention of who said that:

It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement: عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("two gushing springs"), he said: they are overflowing, they do not cease.

Others said: they spout forth water and fruits.

    * Mention of who said that:

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Yamān related to us, on the authority of Ashʿath, on the authority of Jaʿfar, on the authority of Saʿīd, concerning His statement: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs"), he said: with water and fruits.

Others said: they spout forth with all kinds of fruits.

    * Mention of who said that:

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaʿqūb al-Qummī related to us, on the authority of Jaʿfar, on the authority of Saʿīd: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs"), he said: they spout forth with all kinds of fruits.

Others said: they spout forth with good things.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ("In both there are two gushing springs"), he says: they spout forth with good things.

The most correct of these statements is the statement of him who said: thereby is meant that the two springs spout forth with water, for that is what is customarily known of springs, since they were springs of water.
