Or is there for man whatever he wishes?

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: "Or shall man have whatever he desires?" (53:24)
The Exalted, whose remembrance is sublime, says: Or did Muḥammad ﷺ long for that which Allah has bestowed upon him of this honor with which He has honored him — prophethood (nubuwwa) and messengership (risāla) — and He sent down the revelation (waḥy) upon him, and did he desire that, whereupon his Lord granted it to him? To Allah belongs whatever is in the Hereafter and in the first abode — that is the world (dunyā). He gives to whomever He wills of His creatures whatever He wills, and He withholds from whomever He wills of them whatever He wills.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His words "Or shall man have whatever he desires?": And if Muḥammad has desired this, then it is due to him.
