That, then, is an unjust division.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning the explanation of His statement qismatun ḍīzā ("an unjust division"), the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke, even though their wordings differed in the manner in which they expressed it. Some of them said: a skewed division.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā ("that would then be an unjust division"); he said: skewed.
Others said: an unjust division.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā; he says: an unjust division.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda qismatun ḍīzā; he said: an unjust division.
Muḥammad ibn Ḥafṣ Abū ʿUbayd al-Waṣāʾī related to us, saying: Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ibn Lahīʿa related to us, on the authority of Ibn ʿAmra, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā; he said: that would then be an unjust division, in which there is no justice.
Others said: a diminished division.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His statement tilka idhan qismatun ḍīzā; he said: they ascribed daughters to Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, and they made the angels into daughters of Allah, and they worshipped them. And he recited Or has He taken daughters out of what He creates and favored you with sons? * And when one of them is given tidings... the aya, and he recited And they ascribe to Allah the daughters... to the end of the aya. And he said: they invoked a child for Allah, just as the Jews and the Christians invoked, and he recited Thus did those who were before them say. He said: and al-ḍīzā in the language of the Arabs is: the deviant. And he recited They are nothing but names which you have named, you and your forefathers.
