The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَذَا الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ (14) (Taste your trial; this is what you used to seek to hasten (14)).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, means by His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial): it is said to them: taste your trial. And "it is said to them" has been omitted, because the wording indicates it.

And He means by His saying ( فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (your trial): your punishment and your burning.

The people of interpretation differed about this. Some of them said what we have said about it.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His saying ( فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (your trial), he said: your burning.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial): taste your punishment ( هَذَا الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ ) (this is what you used to seek to hasten).

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), He says: on the day when they are punished, then He says: taste your punishment.

It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), He says: your burning.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), He says: your burning.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), he said: taste your punishment.

And others said: by it is meant: taste your punishment, or your denial.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), He says: your denial.

It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh saying: ʿUbayd informed us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk saying concerning His saying ( ذُوقُوا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ) (taste your trial), He says: your burning; and it is also said: your denial.

And His saying ( هَذَا الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ ) (this is what you used to seek to hasten). The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: it is said to them: this punishment which you undergo today is the punishment which you used to seek to hasten in the worldly life.
