Explanation of the words of the Exalted: فَاصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ ("So be patient with what they say, and glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting") (50:39).
The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Be patient, O Muḥammad, with what these Jews say, and with what they fabricate about Allah and what they lie about Him, for Allah lies in wait for them. وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ ("and glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun"), He says: and perform, with praise to your Lord, the morning prayer (ṣalāt al-ṣubḥ) before the rising of the sun, and the afternoon prayer (ṣalāt al-ʿaṣr) before the setting.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ ("and glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun"): that is the dawn prayer (ṣalāt al-fajr), and before its setting: the afternoon prayer (al-ʿaṣr).
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His words وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ ("and glorify the praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before the setting"): before the rising of the sun is the morning prayer (al-ṣubḥ), and before the setting is the afternoon prayer (al-ʿaṣr).
