And His word ( كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ ) "All of them denied the messengers, so My threat was realized" — the Exalted — glorified be His mention — says: all those whom we have mentioned denied the messengers of Allah whom He had sent ( فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ ) — He says: thus the threat which we had announced to them on account of their disbelief in Allah became inescapable for them, and the punishment (ʿadhāb) and the retribution struck them. Our Lord — exalted be His praise — described in this verse only that which He described concerning the sending down of His punishment upon these deniers of the messengers, as a deterrent thereby to the polytheists (mushrikīn) of the Quraysh, and as a notification to them that, if they would not turn away from their denial of His messenger Muḥammad ﷺ, He would send down upon them of the punishment the like of what He had sent down upon those others.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) said.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word ( فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ ), he said: that by which they were destroyed, as a striking of fear into these ones.
