The explanation of the saying: (80) (You see many of them taking the disbelievers as allies. Truly evil is what their souls have sent ahead for them, that Allah is angry with them, and in the punishment they will abide eternally. (5:80))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: "You see," O Muḥammad ﷺ, many of the Children of Israel "taking the disbelievers as allies," that is to say: they take the polytheists (mushrikīn) among the idol-worshippers as allies, and they harbor enmity toward the friends of Allah and His messengers. "Truly evil is what their souls have sent ahead for them"—the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: I swear: truly evil is that which their souls have sent ahead for them, ahead of themselves toward their place of return in the Hereafter, "that Allah is angry with them," that is to say: their souls have sent ahead for them the anger of Allah upon them, because of what they did.
