Tabari

Tafseer of The Table · Al-Maaida · 5:69

Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those [before Him] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

The discourse on the explanation of His statement: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَادُوا وَالصَّابِئُونَ وَالنَّصَارَى مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ("Indeed, those who believe, and those who adhere to Judaism, and the Ṣābiʾūn, and the Christians — whoever among them believes in Allah and the Last Day and acts righteously, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve") (5:69).

Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted is His mention, says: Indeed, those who held Allah and His Messenger to be true — and they are the people of Islam — "and those who adhere to Judaism," and they are the Jews — "and the Ṣābiʾūn," and we have already set forth their matter — "and the Christians, whoever among them believes in Allah and the Last Day," thus holding to be true the resurrection after death — "and acts," in deeds — "righteously" for his return — "no fear shall come upon them," concerning that which they face of the terrors of the Resurrection — "nor shall they grieve," over what they have left behind of the world and its life, after they have beheld that with which Allah has honored them of His abundant reward.
