That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.

His word ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوا مَا أَنزلَ اللَّهُ ("That is because they detested what Allah has sent down"). The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: This which We have inflicted upon them of misery and the nullifying of their deeds, that is because they detested Our Book, which We sent down to our Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, and because they loathed it, denied it, and said: "It is manifest sorcery."
And His word فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ ("so He has rendered their deeds vain"). He says: He has undone their deeds which they performed in the worldly life, and that is their worship of the idols; Allah granted them no benefit thereby, neither in this life nor in the Hereafter; rather, He destroyed them through it, and He made them burn in a blazing fire. This is the judgment of Allah, mighty and exalted is His majesty, concerning all who do not believe in Him, from all kinds of communities, as Qatāda has said.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, he said: Ibn Thawr narrated to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word فَتَعْسًا لَهُمْ ("so misery for them"), he said: It applies generally to the unbelievers (kāfir).
