So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.

The explanation of His saying, the Exalted: فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَاكُمْ (19) ("So know that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and the believing women. And Allah knows your going and coming and your dwelling place.")

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: So know, O Muḥammad, that there is none worthy of worship to whom divinity is fitting or due, and whose worship is permitted to you and to creation, except Allah, who is the Creator of creation and the Owner of all things, to whom everything beneath Him submits with His sovereignty. وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ ("and ask forgiveness for your sin"), and ask your Lord for forgiveness for your past and your new sins, and for the sins of the people who believe in you, of the men and the women. وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَاكُمْ ("And Allah knows your going and coming and your dwelling place"). He says: Indeed, Allah knows your occupation in that with which you occupy yourselves during your waking hours in deeds, and your dwelling place when you lie down at night upon your sleeping places to sleep; none of that remains hidden from Him, and He will requite you for all of this.

And Abū Kurayb has already related to us, saying: ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd related to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn Sulaymān related to us, on the authority of ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sarjis, who said: "I was eating together with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I said: May Allah forgive you, O Messenger of Allah. Then a man of the company said: Does he ask forgiveness for you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Yes, and for you. Then he recited وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ('and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and the believing women')."
