And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all.

Allah — blessed and exalted is He — says: When they had angered Us (fa-lammā āsafūnā), by His word "āsafūnā" He means: they provoked Our wrath.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis spoke.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: When they had angered Us, he says: they provoked Our indignation.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: When they had angered Us, he says: when they had made Us wrathful.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: When they had angered Us: they made Us wrathful.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: When they had angered Us, he said: they made their Lord wrathful.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: When they had angered Us, he said: they made Us wrathful.
Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: When they had angered Us, he said: they made Us wrathful. And that is in accordance with the word of Yaʿqūb: Oh, my grief for Yūsuf (yā asafā ʿalā Yūsuf) (12:84), he said: oh, my sorrow for Yūsuf.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: When they had angered Us, We took vengeance upon them, he said: they made Us wrathful. And His word: We took vengeance upon them, he says: We took vengeance upon them with the immediate punishment (ʿadhāb) that We hastened for them, and We drowned them all in the sea.
