His words: (فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ إِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ) (But when We removed the punishment from them, behold, they broke their word) — the Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: but when We lifted from them the punishment which We had sent down upon them — that concerning which they had promised that, if they were delivered from it, they would follow the way of the truth — behold, then, after We had removed it from them, they broke the covenant which they had made with Us. He says: they acted treacherously and persisted in their error, and continued onward in their corruption.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda (إِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ): that is to say: they act treacherously.
