Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

( إِلا الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي ) (except for Him who created me) means: I dissociate myself from everything that you worship, except for Him who formed me — that is to say: Him who created me — ( فَإِنَّهُ سَيَهْدِينِ ) (for He will surely guide me) means: for He will direct me toward the true religion and enable me to follow the path of right guidance.

And in agreement with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement ( وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ لأبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ ) (And when Ibrāhīm said to his father and his people)... the verse: he said: he employed a stratagem against them, for they used to say: indeed, Allah is our Lord وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ اللَّهُ (and if you were to ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they would surely say: Allah). So he did not dissociate himself from his Lord.

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement ( إِنَّنِي بَرَاءٌ مِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ ) (Indeed, I am free of what you worship): he says: indeed, I dissociate myself from what you worship, "except for Him who created me".

Mohammed related to us, he said: Aḥmad related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī ( إِلا الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي ) (except for Him who created me): he said: Him who created me.
