لَّا يَسْـَٔمُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مِن دُعَآءِ ٱلْخَيْرِ وَإِن مَّسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ فَيَـُٔوسٌۭ قَنُوطٌۭ

Man is not weary of supplication for good [things], but if evil touches him, he is hopeless and despairing.

    And His saying: لا يَسْأَمُ الإِنْسَانُ مِنْ دُعَاءِ الْخَيْرِ ("Man does not tire of supplicating for good") — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: the disbeliever (kāfir) toward Allah does not tire of supplicating for good, that is, of supplicating for good and asking it of his Lord. And "the good" means in this place: wealth and bodily health. He says: he does not tire of asking for that. وَإِنْ مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ ("but if evil touches him") means: and if harm touches him in himself through illness, or through hardship in his livelihood, or through the withholding of his provision, فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ ("then he is despairing and despondent") means: then he is full of despair of relief and deliverance from Allah, despondent of His mercy and of the possibility that this evil which has befallen him might be removed from him.

    Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: لا يَسْأَمُ الإِنْسَانُ مِنْ دُعَاءِ الْخَيْرِ ("Man does not tire of supplicating for good"). He says: the disbeliever (kāfir). وَإِنْ مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ ("but if evil touches him, then he is despairing and despondent"): despondent of the good.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: لا يَسْأَمُ الإِنْسَانُ ("Man does not tire"). He said: he does not tire. And he mentioned that this, in the reading of ʿAbd Allāh, reads: "لا يَسْأَمُ الإِنْسَانُ مِنْ دَعَاءٍ بالخَيْرِ" ("Man does not tire of praying for good").

    وقوله: ( لا يسأم الإنْسَانُ مِنْ دُعَاءِ الْخَيْرِ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: لا يمل الكافر بالله من دعاء الخير, يعني من دعائه بالخير, ومسألته إياه ربه. والخير في هذا الموضع: المال وصحة الجسم, يقول: لا يملّ من طلب ذلك.( وَإِنْ مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ ) يقول: وإن ناله ضرّ في نفسه من سُقم أو جهد في معيشته, أو احتباس من رزقه ( فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ ) يقول: فإنه ذو يأس من روح الله وفرجه, قنوط من رحمته, ومن أن يكشف ذلك الشرّ النازل به عنه. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا محمد, قال: ثنا أحمد, قال: ثنا أسباط, عن السديّ( لا يَسْأَمُ الإنْسَانُ مِنْ دُعَاءِ الْخَيْرِ ) يقول: الكافر ( وَإِنْ مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَيَئُوسٌ قَنُوطٌ ) : قانط من الخير. حدثني يونس, قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب, قال: قال ابن زيد, في قوله: ( لا يَسْأَمُ الإنْسَانُ ) قال: لا يملّ. وذكر أن ذلك في قراءة عبد الله: " لا يَسْأَمُ الإنْسَانُ مِنْ دَعَاءٍ بالخَيْرِ".
