Explanation of the saying of the Exalted: (And if they are patient, the Fire is an abode for them; and if they ask for grace, they are not among those to whom grace is granted) (41:24).
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and if these who are gathered to the Fire patiently endure the Fire, then the Fire is a dwelling and an abode for them. He says: and if they ask for grace (al-ʿutbā) — which is the return for them to that which they love, through the lightening of the punishment (ʿadhāb) upon them — He says: then they are not among the people who are returned to the paradise (janna), so that the punishment in which they are might be lightened upon them. And that is like the word of the Exalted, whose praise is great, in which He informs about them: (They say: our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us) ... up to His word: وَلا تُكَلِّمُونِ (and do not speak to Me) (23:106-108). And like their word to the keepers of Hell (jahannam): (Call upon your Lord, that He may lighten for us one day of the punishment) ... up to His word: (And the call of the disbelievers is only in error) (40:49-50).
