أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ مَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ عَنْهَا مَحِيصًۭا

The refuge of those will be Hell, and they will not find from it an escape.

    The explanation of His word: "For them hell (jahannam) is an abode, and they will find no escape from it" (4:121)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted means by His word "for them" — that is: those who have taken the devil as a protector instead of Allah — "for them hell (jahannam) is an abode," that is: their destination, the place to which they go, is hell; "and they will find no escape from it," that is: they will, when Allah drives them there on the Day of Resurrection, find no way out away from the hell toward which they might turn aside.

    One says concerning this: "So-and-so turned away (ḥāṣa) from this matter, he turns away (yaḥīṣu), turning away (ḥayṣan and ḥuyūṣan)," when he swerves away from it.

    To this belongs the report of Ibn ʿUmar, that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a raiding party in which I was, and we met the polytheists (mushrikīn), and we swerved away with a swerving (fa-ḥiṣnā ḥayṣatan). And some of them said: "They swerved away with a swerving (fa-jāḍū jayḍatan)." And "al-ḥayṣ" and "al-jayḍ" are close to each other in meaning.

    القول في تأويل قوله : أُولَئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَلا يَجِدُونَ عَنْهَا مَحِيصًا (121) قال أبو جعفر: يعني جل ثناؤه بقوله: " أولئك "، هؤلاء الذين اتخذوا الشيطان وليًّا من دون الله=" مأواهم جهنم "، يعني: مصيرهم الذين يصيرون إليه جهنم، (60) =" ولا يجدون عنها محيصًا "، يقول: لا يجدون عن جهنم -إذا صيّرهم الله إليها يوم القيامة- مَعْدِلا يعدِلون إليه. * * * يقال منه: " حاص فلان عن هذا الأمر يَحِيص حَيْصًا وحُيُوصًا "، إذا عدل عنه. ومنه خبر ابن عمر أنه قال: بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سرِيّة كنت فيهم، فلقينا المشركين فحِصْنا حَيْصة، (61) = وقال بعضهم: " فجاضوا جيضَة ". و " الحَيص " و " الجَيْض "، متقاربا المعنى.
