Tabari

Tafseer of The Groups · Az-Zumar · 39:4

If Allah had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allah, the One, the Prevailing.

And His word: ( لَوْ أَرَادَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَتَّخِذَ وَلَدًا ) (Had Allah willed to take a child) — the Exalted, whose praise is proclaimed, says: had Allah willed to take a child — and that does not befit Him — then He would have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed; He says: then He would have chosen from His creation whatever He willed. And His word: ( سُبْحَانَهُ هُوَ اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ ) (Glory be to Him! He is Allah, the One, the All-Subduer) means: the glorification of Allah, [far removed] from having a child, and from that which the polytheists (mushrikīn) who ascribe partners to Him have attributed to Him. ( هُوَ اللَّهُ ) (He is Allah) means: He is the One who is worshipped by all things, and if He had a child, then that child would not be a servant of His. He says: all things are thus His possession, so how could He have a child, while He is the One who has no partner in His possession and His dominion, and the All-Subduer over His creation by His power, so that everything submits to Him and is humbled by His overpowering might.
