Tafseer of The Groups · Az-Zumar · 39:32
So who is more unjust than one who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
The explanation of His — exalted is He — statement: فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَذَبَ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِلْكَافِرِينَ ("Who then is more unjust than he who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it comes to him? Is there not in Hell (jahannam) an abode for the unbelievers (kāfir)?") (32)
And His statement فَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنْ كَذَبَ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ ("Who then is more unjust than he who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it comes to him?"). The Exalted — exalted is His mention — says: who among Allah's creatures commits a greater lie than he who lies about Allah, and claims that He has a child and a consort, or that He has declared forbidden some foodstuffs that He has not declared forbidden, وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ ("and denies the truth when it comes to him?"). He says: and who denies the Book of Allah when He sent it down upon Muḥammad and Allah dispatched him with it as a messenger, and who rejected the word "there is no god but Allah."
And in accordance with what we have said about that, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, وَكَذَّبَ بِالصِّدْقِ إِذْ جَاءَهُ ("and denies the truth when it comes to him"): that is to say: the Qurʾān.
And His statement أَلَيْسَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِلْكَافِرِينَ ("Is there not in Hell (jahannam) an abode for the unbelievers?"). The Blessed and Exalted says: is there not in the Fire a refuge and dwelling place for whoever is an unbeliever in Allah, and refuses to affirm Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace — and to follow him in that to which he calls him, namely what he has brought from Allah of the profession of oneness (tawḥīd) and the judgment of the Qurʾān?
