   The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: Boven hen zijn er schaduwkappen van vuur, en onder hen zijn er schaduwkappen. Daarmee boezemt Allah Zijn dienaren vrees in. O Mijn dienaren, vrees Mij dan (16)

   He, exalted is His mention, says concerning these losers on the Day of Resurrection in Hell (jahannam): ( above them are canopies of fire ) — and that is like the form of canopies built out of fire — ( and beneath them are canopies ). He says: and beneath them, of the Fire, is that which rises up above them, until that which rises up above them from the Fire forms itself beneath them as canopies. That is comparable to His saying, exalted is His praise: Voor hen is er een rustbed van de hel, en boven hen zijn er bedekkingen (7:41), which cover them over from that which is beneath them of the resting-bed.

   And His saying: ( Thereby Allah instils fear in His servants. O My servants, fear Me then ) — He, exalted is His mention, says: this of which I have informed you, O people, concerning the punishment (ʿadhāb) that awaits the losers on the Day of Resurrection, is an instilling of fear by your Lord upon you; He instils fear in you thereby, so that you may be on your guard against it and thus shun acts of disobedience to Him, and so that you may turn from your unbelief (kufr) to belief (īmān) in Him, holding His Messenger to be truthful, and following His command and His prohibition, so that you may escape His punishment in the Hereafter. ( Fear Me then ) — He says: fear Me, then, by fulfilling My obligations upon you, and shunning acts of disobedience to Me, so that you may escape My punishment and My wrath.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : لَهُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمِنْ تَحْتِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ ذَلِكَ يُخَوِّفُ اللَّهُ بِهِ عِبَادَهُ يَا عِبَادِ فَاتَّقُونِ (16) يقول تعالى ذكره لهؤلاء الخاسرين يوم القيامة في جهنم: ( مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ مِنَ النَّارِ ) وذلك كهيئة الظلل المبنية من النار ( وَمِنْ تَحْتِهِمْ ظُلَلٌ ) يقول: ومن تحتهم من النار ما يعلوهم, حتى يصير ما يعلوهم منها من تحتهم ظللا وذلك نظير قوله جلّ ثناؤه لَهُمْ: مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ مِهَادٌ وَمِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ غَوَاشٍ يغشاهم مما تحتهم فيها من المهاد. وقوله: ( ذَلِكَ يُخَوِّفُ اللَّهُ بِهِ عِبَادَهُ يَا عِبَادِ فَاتَّقُونِ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: هذا الذي أخبرتكم أيها الناس به, مما للخاسرين يوم القيامة من العذاب, تخويف من ربكم لكم, يخوفكم به لتحذروه, فتجتنبوا معاصيه, وتنيبوا من كفركم إلى الإيمان به, وتصديق رسوله, واتباع أمره ونهيه, فتنجوا من عذابه في الآخرة ( فَاتَّقُونِ ) يقول: فاتقوني بأداء فرائضي عليكم, واجتناب معاصيّ, لتنجوا من عذابي وسخطي.
