Tafseer of The letter Saad · Saad · 38:18

إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ

Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allah] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.

    And His word ( إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَهُ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ) ("Indeed, We made the mountains subservient to him, so that they proclaim the glorification in the evening and at the rising of the sun"): the Exalted, whose praise is proclaimed, says: indeed, We made the mountains subservient, so that they proclaim the glorification together with Dāwūd in the evening — and that is from the time of the afternoon prayer (al-ʿaṣr) until the night — and at the rising of the sun (al-ishrāq) — and that is in the morning, at the time of the forenoon (al-ḍuḥā).

    It is mentioned that when Dāwūd proclaimed the glorification, the mountains proclaimed it together with him.

    As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَهُ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ): they proclaim the glorification together with Dāwūd when he proclaimed it, in the evening and at the rising of the sun.

    Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word ( بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ), he said: when the sun rises and it becomes forenoon.

    Abū Kurayb related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Bishr related to us, on the authority of Misʿar ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm, on the authority of Mūsā ibn Abī Kathīr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, that a report had reached him that Umm Hāniʾ mentioned that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on the day of the conquest of Mecca performed the forenoon prayer (al-ḍuḥā) of eight rakaʿāt. Ibn ʿAbbās said: I had indeed supposed that for this hour there was a prayer, for Allah says: ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ).

    Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Barqī related to us, he said: ʿAmr ibn Abī Salama related to us, he said: Ṣadaqa related to us, he said: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūba related to me, on the authority of Abū al-Mutawakkil, on the authority of Ayyūb ibn Ṣafwān, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Nawfal, that Ibn ʿAbbās used not to perform the forenoon prayer (al-ḍuḥā). He said: then I brought him in to Umm Hāniʾ and said: inform him of what you informed me. Umm Hāniʾ said: the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came in to me on the day of the conquest in my house. He gave the order for water, which was poured into a bowl; then he gave the order for a garment, which was held between me and him, and he washed himself. Then he sprinkled a corner of the house and performed eight rakaʿāt — and that was of the forenoon — whose standing, bowing, prostration, and sitting were equal, the one close to the other. Ibn ʿAbbās went out saying: I have read what is between the two covers, and I did not know the forenoon prayer (ṣalāt al-ḍuḥā), until now ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ). I used to say: where is the prayer of the rising of the sun (al-ishrāq)? Then he said: these are the prayer of the rising of the sun (al-ishrāq).

    ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūba related to us, on the authority of Mutawakkil, on the authority of Ayyūb ibn Ṣafwān, the freedman of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, "that Umm Hāniʾ bint Abī Ṭālib related that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came in to her on the day of the conquest" — then he mentioned something similar.

    And on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ ), something similar.

    وقوله ( إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَهُ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: إنا سخرنا الجبال يسبحن مع داود بالعشيّ, وذلك من وقت العصر إلى الليل, والإشراق, وذلك بالغداة وقت الضحى. ذُكر أن داود كان إذا سبح سبحت معه الجبال. كما حدثنا بشر, قال: ثنا يزيد, قال: ثنا سعيد, عن قتادة ( إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا الْجِبَالَ مَعَهُ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ) يسبحن مع داود إذا سبح بالعشيّ والإشراق. حدثني يونس, قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب, قال: قال ابن زيد, في قوله ( بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ) قال: حين تُشرق الشمس وتضحى. حدثنا أبو كريب, قال: ثنا محمد بن بشر, عن مسعر بن عبد الكريم, عن موسى بن أبي كثير, عن ابن عباس أنه بلغه أن أم هانئ ذكرت أن رسول الله صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم يوم فتح مكة, صلى الضحى ثمان ركعات, فقال ابن عباس: قد ظننت أن لهذه الساعة صلاة, يقول الله: ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ). حدثنا ابن عبد الرحيم البرقي, قال: ثنا عمرو بن أبي سلمة, قال: ثنا صدقة, قال: ثني سعيد بن أبي عَروبة, عن أبي المتوكل, عن أيوب بن صفوان, عن عبد الله بن الحارث بن نوفل أن ابن عباس كان لا يصلي الضحى, قال: فأدخلته على أم هانئ, فقلت: اخبري هذا بما أخبرتني به, فقالت أم هانئ: دخل عليّ رسول الله صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم يوم الفتح في بيتي, فأمر بماء فصب في قصعة, ثم أمر بثوب فأخذ بيني وبينه, فاغتسل, ثم رشّ ناحية البيت فصلى ثمان ركعات, وذلك من الضحى قيامهنّ وركوعهنّ وسجودهنّ وجلوسهنّ سواء, قريب بعضهن من بعض, فخرج ابن عباس, وهو يقول: لقد قرأت ما بين اللوحين, ما عرفت صلاة الضحى إلا الآن ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ وَالإشْرَاقِ ) وكنت أقول: أين صلاة الإشراق, ثم قال: بعد هنّ صلاة الإشراق. حدثنا عمرو بن عليّ, قال: ثنا عبد الأعلى, قال: ثنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة, عن متوكل, عن أيوب بن صفوان, مولى عبد الله بن الحارث, عن عبد الله بن الحارث،" أن أم هانئ ابنة أبي طالب, حَدثت أن رسول الله صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم يوم الفتح دخل عليها ثم ذكر نحوه " . وعن ابن عباس في قوله ( يُسَبِّحْنَ بِالْعَشِيِّ ) مثل ذلك.
