The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

His word قَالُوا بَلْ لَمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ ("They will say: 'No, you were not believers, and we had no power over you'" — 37:29): the Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: the jinn said to the people, answering them: no, you did not acknowledge the oneness of Allah, and you worshipped the idols.
