And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

Exposition of the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ("And We gave him the glad tidings of Isḥāq, a prophet from among the righteous") (112)
He, exalted be His mention, says: and We gave Ibrāhīm the glad tidings of Isḥāq as a prophet, as a reward to him for his good-doing and his obedience.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ , he said: he was given the glad tidings that this one would be a prophet thereafter, after this matter of his had occurred, when he had generously given himself to Allah.
Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of Dāwūd, on the authority of ʿIkrima, he said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: the one who was to be slaughtered (al-dhabīḥ) was Isḥāq. He said: and His statement وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ , he said: he was given the glad tidings of his prophethood. He said: and His statement "And We bestowed upon him out of Our mercy his brother Hārūn as a prophet", he said: Hārūn was older than Mūsā, but He meant: Allah bestowed upon him his prophethood.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān related to us, saying: I heard Dāwūd narrating, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās concerning this verse وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ , he said: he was not given the glad tidings of him as a prophet until He ransomed him from the slaughter; the glad tidings of prophethood were not present at his birth.
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Yazīd al-Ṭaḥḥān related to me, saying: Ibn Idrīs related to us, on the authority of Dāwūd, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās concerning Allah's statement وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا , he said: he was given only the glad tidings of prophethood.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ , he said: Ibrāhīm was given the glad tidings of Isḥāq.
Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ , he said: with his prophethood.
Abū al-Sāʾib related to me, saying: Ibn Fuḍayl related to us, on the authority of Ḍirār, on the authority of an old man from the people of the mosque, he said: Ibrāhīm was given the glad tidings when he was one hundred and seventeen years old.
