His statement وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الآخِرِينَ ("And We left for him among the later generations") — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: and We have left for him, among those who come after him until the Day of Resurrection, a fair praise.
As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الآخِرِينَ ("And We left for him among the later generations"); he said: Allah left for him the fair praise among the later generations.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الآخِرِينَ ("And We left for him among the later generations"): Ibrāhīm asked, saying: وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخِرِينَ ("And grant me an honorable mention among the later generations"). He said: so Allah left for him the fair praise among the later generations, just as He left the evil name enduring over Farʿawn and his like; likewise He left the truthful name and the good praise enduring over these.
And it has been said: the meaning of it is: and We left for him among the later generations the salutation of peace, and that is His statement سَلامٌ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ ("Peace be upon Ibrāhīm"); and that is a statement which is transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās — we have refrained from mentioning it, because in its chain of transmission (isnād) there is someone whose mention we did not deem permissible. And we have already previously mentioned the transmitted reports concerning His statement وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الآخِرِينَ ("And We left for him among the later generations"). And it has been said: the meaning of it is: and We left for him among the later generations that it be said: peace be upon Ibrāhīm.
