And His word ( Truly, this is indeed the manifest trial ) — by this He says, exalted is His mention: truly, Our command to you, O Ibrāhīm, to slaughter your son Isḥāq, that is indeed the trial. He says: that is indeed the test which makes clear, to whoever reflects upon it, that it is a severe trial and a tremendous affliction. And Ibn Zayd used to say: the trial (al-balāʾ) in this place means evil, and not a test.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word ( Truly, this is indeed the manifest trial ), he said: this refers to the trial that befell him, namely that he was to slaughter his son. ( You have fulfilled the vision ): you have been tried with a tremendous trial, you were commanded to slaughter your son. He said: and this belongs to the detestable trial, namely evil, and not to the trial of testing.
