And His statement لِيُنْذِرَ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا (that he may warn whoever is living). He says: Muḥammad is nothing but an admonition for you, that he may warn among you, O people, whoever is living of heart, who understands what is said to him and comprehends what is explained to him, not the one whose inner being is dead and blunt.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Abū Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of a man, on the authority of Abū Rawq, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning His statement لِيُنْذِرَ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا (that he may warn whoever is living): he said: whoever is intelligent.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda لِيُنْذِرَ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا (that he may warn whoever is living): living of heart, living of sight.

His statement وَيَحِقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ (and that the word may be realized against the disbelievers). He says: and that the punishment (ʿadhāb) may be realized against the people of disbelief (kufr) in Allah, who turn away from following him and turn aside from that with which he came to them from Allah.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda وَيَحِقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ (and that the word may be realized against the disbelievers): because of their deeds.
