   The statement on the explanation of His word, the Exalted: وَآيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ("And a sign for them is that We carried their offspring in the laden ship") (41)

   The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and also an indication for them, and a sign of Our power over everything that We will, is that We carried their offspring — that is to say: those of the children of Ādam who were saved — in the ship of Nūḥ; and that is what He, exalted be His praise, intended by the "laden ship" (al-fulk al-mashḥūn). And al-fulk is the ship, and al-mashḥūn means: the filled, the heavily laden.

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning his statement الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ , he said: the laden ship is the vessel in which Nūḥ was, and the offspring that was in that vessel; he said: and al-mashḥūn is that which is laden, into which something is placed so that its people might sail in it; they placed in it what they wished, so that sometimes it became full and sometimes it did not become full.

   Al-Faḍl ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: Do you know what the laden ship (al-fulk al-mashḥūn) is? We said: no. He said: it is the heavily laden.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَآيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ (41) يقول تعالى ذكره: ودليل لهم أيضًا، وعلامة على قُدرتنا على كلّ ما نشاء، حملنا ذرّيتهم ، يعني من نجا من ولد آدم في سفينة نوح، وإياها عنى جلّ ثناؤه بالفُلك المشحون؛ والفلك: هي السفينة، والمشحون: المملوء الموقر. &; 20-522 &; وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس قوله ( أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) يقول: الممتلئ . حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس، قوله ( فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) يعني المثقل . حدثني سليمان بن عبد الجبار، قال: ثنا محمد بن الصلت، قال: ثنا أبو كدينة، عن عطاء، عن سعيد ( الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) قال: الموقَر . حدثنا عمران بن موسى، قال: ثنا عبد الوارث، قال: ثنا يونس، عن الحسن، في قوله ( الْمَشْحُونِ ) قال: المحمول . حُدثت عن الحسين، قال: سمعت أبا معاذ يقول: أخبرنا عبيد، قال: سمعت الضحاك يقول في قوله ( أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) يعني: سفينة نوح عليه السلام . حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله ( وَآيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) الموقر، يعني سفينة نوح . حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله ( الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) قال: الفلك المشحون: المَرْكَب الذي كان فيه نوح، والذرية التي كانت في ذلك المركب؛ قال: والمشحون: الذي قد شُحِن، الذي قد جعل فيه ليركبه أهله، جعلوا فيه ما يريدون، فربما امتلأ وربما لم يمتلىء . حدثنا الفضل بن الصباح، قال: ثنا محمد بن فضيل، عن عطاء، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن ابن عباس قال: أتدرون ما الفُلك المشحون؟ قلنا: لا قال: هو المُوقَر . حدثنا عمرو بن عبد الحميد الآمُلِي، قال: ثنا هارون، عن جُوَيبر، عن &; 20-523 &; الضحاك، في قوله ( الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ ) قال: المُوقَر .
