The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَقَالُوا نَحْنُ أَكْثَرُ أَمْوَالا وَأَوْلادًا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ (34:35) (And they said: We have more wealth and children, and we shall not be punished.)

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: And the people of arrogance toward Allah, from every city into which We sent a warner among Our prophets and messengers, said: We have more wealth and children, and we shall not be punished in the Hereafter, for had Allah not been pleased with the creed and the deeds in which we are engaged, He would not have bestowed upon us wealth and children, nor granted us ample provision; He has only given us what He has given us of that out of His being pleased with our deeds, and He has favored us above others on account of our excellence and our nearness to Him.
