وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ ٱلنَّبِيِّۦنَ مِيثَٰقَهُمْ وَمِنكَ وَمِن نُّوحٍۢ وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَى ٱبْنِ مَرْيَمَ ۖ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُم مِّيثَٰقًا غَلِيظًۭا

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, the son of Mary; and We took from them a solemn covenant.

    The explanation of the words of the Exalted: وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا (33:7) (And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā the son of Maryam; and We took from them a solemn covenant.)

    The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: That was written in the Book, when We recorded in the Book everything that will be. وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ (And when We took from the prophets their covenant) — that too was written in the Book. By "the covenant" (mīthāq) is meant: the solemn compact (al-ʿahd), and we have already explained that previously with its supporting proofs. وَمِنْكَ (and from you), O Muḥammad, وَمِنْ نُوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا (and from Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā the son of Maryam; and We took from them a solemn covenant). He says: and We took from all of them a confirmed compact, that they would mutually affirm one another.

    As Bishr related to us; he said: Yazīd related to us; he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning His words: وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ (And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ). He said: It was related to us that the prophet of Allah, the Prophet ﷺ, used to say: "I was the first of the prophets in creation and the last of them in being sent." وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا (and Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā the son of Maryam; and We took from them a solemn covenant) — a covenant that Allah took from the prophets, specifically that they would mutually affirm one another and follow one another.

    Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to us; he said: Sulaymān related to us; he said: Abū Hilāl related to us; he said: When Qatāda recited this verse, وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ (And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ), he said: The prophet of Allah ﷺ was the first of the prophets in creation.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me; he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us; he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me; he said: al-Ḥasan related to us; he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words of Allah: مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ (from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ). He said: in the loins of Ādam.

    Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me; he said: my father related to me; he said: my uncle related to me; he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās concerning his words: وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا (and We took from them a solemn covenant). He said: the solemn covenant is the compact (al-ʿahd).

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا (7) يقول تعالى ذكره: كان ذلك في الكتاب مسطورا، إذ كتبنا كلّ ما هو كائن في الكتاب (وَإذْ أخَذْنا مِنَ النَّبيِّينَ مِيثاقَهُمْ) كان ذلك أيضا في الكتاب مسطورا، ويعني بالميثاق: العهد، وقد بيَّنا ذلك بشواهده فيما مضى قبل (وَمِنْكَ) يا محمد ( وَمِنْ نُوحٍ وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا ) يقول: وأخذنا من جميعهم عهدا مؤكدا أن يصدّق بعضهم بعضا. كما حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة قوله: ( وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ ) قال: وذُكر لنا أن نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقول: " كُنْتُ أوَّلَ الأنْبِياءِ فِي الخَلْقِ، وآخِرَهُمْ فِي البَعْثِ"، ( وَإِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا ) ميثاق أخذه الله على النبيين، خصوصا أن يصدّق بعضهم بعضا، وأن يتبع بعضهم بعضا. حدثنا محمد بن بشار، قال: ثنا سليمان، قال: ثنا أبو هلال، قال: كان قتادة إذا تلا هذه الآية ( وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ ) قال: كان نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في أوّل النبيين في الخلق. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، في قول الله: ( مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِيثَاقَهُمْ وَمِنْكَ وَمِنْ نُوحٍ ) قال: في ظهر آدم. حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس قوله: ( وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُمْ مِيثَاقًا غَلِيظًا ) قال: الميثاق الغليظ: العهد.
