Say, "Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?" And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or any helper.

His statement: qul man dhā alladhī yaʿṣimukum mina Allāhi in arāda bikum sūʾan aw arāda bikum raḥmatan ("Say: 'Who is it that can protect you against Allāh, if He wills to bring evil upon you, or if He wills to show you mercy?'"). The Exalted, Whose praise is exalted, says: say, O Muḥammad, to these who ask you for permission and say: inna buyūtanā ʿawra ("Our houses are exposed") — fleeing from being killed: who is it that can prevent you against Allāh, if He wills to bring evil upon you in your person, in the form of killing, trial, or something else, or wellbeing and preservation? And can anything of evil or mercy befall you in your person other than from His side?
As Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, he said: Yazīd ibn Rūmān related to me: qul man dhā alladhī yaʿṣimukum mina Allāhi in arāda bikum sūʾan aw arāda bikum raḥmatan ("Say: 'Who is it that can protect you against Allāh, if He wills to bring evil upon you, or if He wills to show you mercy?'") — that is to say: the matter is nothing other than what I have decreed.
And His statement: wa-lā yajidūna lahum min dūni Allāhi waliyyan wa-lā naṣīrā ("and they will not find for themselves, besides Allāh, any protector or any helper"). The Exalted, Whose praise is exalted, says: and these hypocrites, if Allāh wills to bring evil upon them in their person and their possessions, will not find min dūni Allāhi waliyyan ("besides Allāh, any protector") who would take charge of them with sufficing care, wa-lā naṣīrā ("nor any helper") who would aid them against Allāh and thereby ward off from them what Allāh wills to bring upon them of evil thereof.
