The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْفَتْحُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (28) (And they say: "When will this decision come, if you are truthful?" (32:28))
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: وَيَقُولُونَ (And they say) — these who ascribe partners to Allah, O Muhammad, to you: مَتَى هَذَا الْفَتْحُ (When will this decision come?). And there has been disagreement over its meaning. Some said: its meaning is: when will this judgment between us and you come, and when will this reward and punishment take place?
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning His saying وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْفَتْحُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (And they say: "When will this decision come, if you are truthful?"): he said: the companions of the prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "We have a day on which we shall soon find rest and enjoy bounty." Then the polytheists (mushrikīn) said: مَتى هذا الفَتْحُ إن كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (When will this decision come, if you are truthful?).
And others said: no, by this the conquest of Mecca was meant.
And the correct view concerning this is the view of the one who said: its meaning is: and they say: when will this judgment between us and you come — by which they mean the punishment.
