The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: O my son, establish the ritual prayer (ṣalāh), enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, that is among the matters of firm resolve (17).
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says, reporting about the saying of Luqmān to his son: O my son, establish the ritual prayer (ṣalāh) with its prescribed limits. And enjoin what is right — He says: and enjoin upon the people obedience to Allah and the following of His command. And forbid what is wrong — He says: and forbid the people acts of disobedience toward Allah and the committing of His forbidden things. And be patient over what befalls you — He says: and be patient over what befalls you from the people for the sake of Allah, when you enjoin upon them what is right and forbid them what is wrong, and let not what comes upon you from them turn you away from that. Indeed, that is among the matters of firm resolve — He says: indeed, that is among the matters which Allah has commanded, as a firm resolve on His part.
And in the same sense as what we have said about this, the exegetes spoke.
* The mention of who said that:
Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning His saying: O my son, establish the ritual prayer, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you, he said: be patient over what befalls you in that of harm. Indeed, that is among the matters of firm resolve, he said: indeed, that is among what Allah has irrevocably decreed of the matters; He says: among what Allah has commanded of the matters.
