Tabari

Tafseer of The Romans · Ar-Room · 30:8

Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers.

The explanation of His word, the Exalted: أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ النَّاسِ بِلِقَاءِ رَبِّهِمْ لَكَافِرُونَ ("Do they not then reflect within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth, and for an appointed term. And indeed, many among the people are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord") (30:8).

The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: Have these deniers of the resurrection among your people, O Muḥammad, then not reflected upon Allah's creation of their own selves, and that He created them when they were nothing, and then caused them to pass through states and stages until they became men — so that they might know that the One who did that is able, after their perishing, to bring them back again as a new creation, and thereafter to reward the doer of good among them for his doing good and the doer of evil for his doing evil? He wrongs none of them, such that He would punish him for the crime of another, and He withholds from none of them the reward of his deed, because He is the Just who does no wrong. مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ("Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them") except with justice and the upholding of the truth. وَأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ("and for an appointed term"), He says: and for a determined, named term; when that time is reached, He causes all of that to perish, and He changes the earth into another earth, and the heavens [into other heavens], and they appear before Allah, the One, the Overwhelming. And indeed, many among the people are deniers and rejecters of the meeting with their Lord, out of ignorance on their part that their return is to Allah after their perishing, and out of heedlessness on their part toward the Hereafter.
