Tabari

Tafseer of The Family of Imraan · Aal-i-Imraan · 3:84

Say, "We have believed in Allah and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him."

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: (84) (Say: "We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq and Yaʿqūb and the tribes, and in what was given to Mūsā and ʿĪsā and the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are submitted.") (84)

Abū Jaʿfar said: By this He means — exalted is His praise —: "Do you then desire a religion other than that of Allah," O assembly of Jews, "while whoever is in the heavens and on the earth has submitted to Him, willingly and unwillingly, and to Him you shall be returned." So if they desire a religion other than that of Allah, O Muḥammad, then say to them: "We believe in Allah." Thus the mention of His statement "if they say yes," or the mention of His statement "if they desire a religion other than that of Allah," has been omitted, because what is evident from the text indicates it.

And His words "Say: We believe in Allah" mean: say to them, O Muḥammad: we have given belief to Allah, that He is our Lord and our God, that there is no god but Him, and that we worship no one besides Him. "And in what has been sent down to us," that is to say: and say: and we have also given belief to what has been sent down to us of His revelation and His sending down, and we have acknowledged this. "And in what was sent down to Ibrāhīm," that is to say: and we have also given belief to what was sent down to Ibrāhīm, the intimate friend of Allah (khalīl Allāh), and to his two sons Ismāʿīl and Isḥāq, and to his grandson Yaʿqūb, and to what was sent down to "the tribes" (al-asbāṭ) — and they are the twelve sons of Yaʿqūb, and we have already set out their names in a manner that makes repetition in this place unnecessary. "And in what was given to Mūsā and ʿĪsā," that is to say: and in addition to that we have also given belief to that which Allah sent down to Mūsā and ʿĪsā of the books and the revelation, and to what He sent down to the prophets from Himself.

And that which Allah gave to Mūsā and ʿĪsā — in which Allah, mighty and exalted, commanded Muḥammad to affirm both and to give belief to it — is the Tawrāt which He gave to Mūsā, and the Injīl which He gave to ʿĪsā.

"We make no distinction between any of them," that is to say: we do not affirm some of them and deny others, and we do not believe in some of them and disbelieve in others, as the Jews and the Christians have disbelieved in some of the prophets of Allah and affirmed others; rather, we believe in them all and affirm them. "And to Him we are submitted," that is to say: and we profess for Allah submission (islam), and we profess no religion other than that; rather, we declare ourselves free before Him of every religion other than His, and of every religious community besides His.

And by His words "and to Him we are submitted" He means: and we are obediently subject to Him, humble in servitude (ʿubūda), acknowledging Him in His divinity and His lordship, and that there is no god but Him. And we have already mentioned in the preceding the report bearing the meaning of what we have said concerning this, and we have considered repeating it undesirable.
