The explanation of His word: "Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down and we follow the Messenger; so inscribe us among the witnesses" (3:53).
Abū Jaʿfar said: This is a report from Allah, Mighty and Exalted, about the disciples (al-ḥawāriyyūn), that they said: "Our Lord, we believe," that is: we have held to be true = "in what You have sent down," namely: in what You have sent down upon Your prophet ʿĪsā from Your Book = "and we follow the Messenger," by which is meant: we have become the followers of ʿĪsā in Your religion with which You sent him forth, and his helpers in the service of the truth with which You sent him to Your servants = and His word: "so inscribe us among the witnesses," this means: affix our names to the names of those who bore witness to the truth, who acknowledged before You the existence of the oneness (tawḥīd), who held Your messengers to be true, and who followed Your command and Your prohibition; so count us among their number and place us with them in the honor with which You favor them, and grant us their station, and do not make us among those who denied You, who turned away from Your path, and who opposed Your command and Your prohibition.
Allah, exalted be His praise, thereby makes known to His creation the way of those whose words and deeds pleased Him, so that they might emulate their path and follow their method (minhāj), in order that they might attain that which they attained of the ranks of His favor = and He thereby gives the lie to those who, out of the doctrines outside of the pure faith submitted to Allah (al-ḥanīfiyya al-muslima), ascribed something, in their claim concerning the prophets of Allah that they adhered to another religion = and He adduces it as proof against the delegation of the People of Najrān who disputed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: namely that the word of those among the followers of ʿĪsā with whom Allah was pleased was in conflict with their word, and that their method was other than their method, as in:
7130 - Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr: "Our Lord, we believe in what You have sent down and we follow the Messenger; so inscribe us among the witnesses," that is: such was their word and their belief.
