Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

The explanation of His saying: Zeg: Indien gij Allah liefhebt, volgt mij dan; Allah zal u liefhebben en uw zonden vergeven, want Allah is vergevensgezind, genadevol (3:31).
(Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) differ concerning the occasion on which this verse was revealed. Some of them said: it was revealed concerning a people who, in the time of the Prophet ﷺ, said: "We truly love our Lord." Thereupon Allah, Mighty and Exalted, commanded His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ to say to them: "If you are truthful in what you say, then follow me, for that is the sign of your truthfulness in what you have said about that."

6845 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to us, on the authority of Bakr ibn al-Aswad, who said: I heard al-Ḥasan say: a people said in the time of the Prophet ﷺ: "O Muḥammad, we truly love our Lord!" Then Allah, Mighty and Exalted, revealed: "Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins." Thus He made the following of His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ a mark of His love, and a punishment (ʿadhāb) for whoever opposes him.
6846 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: ʿAlī ibn al-Haytham related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb related to us, on the authority of Abū ʿUbayda, who said: I heard al-Ḥasan say: peoples said in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "O Muḥammad, we truly love our Lord!" Thereupon Allah, Mighty and Exalted, revealed concerning that a Qurʾānic text: "Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins." Thus Allah made the following of His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ a mark of His love, and a punishment for whoever opposes him.
6847 - Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning His saying: "If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you." He said: there was a people who claimed that they loved Allah; they said: "We truly love our Lord!" Then Allah commanded them to follow Muḥammad ﷺ, and He made the following of Muḥammad a mark of His love.
6848 - Muḥammad ibn Sinān related to me, saying: Abū Bakr al-Ḥanafī related to us, saying: ʿAbbād ibn Manṣūr related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning His saying: "If you love Allah" – the verse. He said: there were peoples in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who claimed that they loved Allah; thereupon Allah willed to set for their claim a confirmation from action, and so He said: "If you love Allah" – the verse. The following of Muḥammad ﷺ was the confirmation of their claim.

And others said: no, this is rather a command from Allah to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ to say to the delegation of Najrān, who had come to him from among the Christians: if what you say about ʿĪsā in the way of lofty statements is said only out of exaltation of Allah and love for Him, then follow Muḥammad ﷺ.
Mention of who said that:
6849 - Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr: "Say: If you love Allah" – that is to say: if this which you say – he means: about ʿĪsā – is out of love for Allah and exaltation of Him, "then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins" – that is to say: what has passed of your unbelief (kufr) – "and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."

Abū Jaʿfar said: and the most fitting of the two views for the interpretation of the verse is the view of Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr. For in this surah, neither before this verse, has there been any mention of anyone other than the delegation of Najrān; there is no mention of a people who claimed to love Allah, nor that they exalted Him, such that His saying "If you love Allah, then follow me" would be a response to their statement, according to what al-Ḥasan has said.
And as for what al-Ḥasan has related concerning that, as we have mentioned: there is with us no authentic report about it, such that one could say that it is indeed so, even though there is in the surah no indication that it is as he has said. Unless al-Ḥasan, by the people he mentioned – whom he said said that in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ – intended the delegation of Najrān from among the Christians; then that of his statement would agree with our choice in it.
Now, since there is no report about that, as we have said, and there is in the verse no indication of what we have described, the most fitting for us is to connect its interpretation to that for which there is an indication from the verses of the surah, and that is what we have described. For what precedes this verse, from the beginning of this surah, and what comes after it, is a report about them, and an argument by Allah in favor of His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, and a proof for the falsity of their statement about the Masīḥ. It is therefore obligatory that this verse too be directed in meaning toward the import of what precedes it and the meaning of what follows it.

Abū Jaʿfar said: since the matter is as we have described, the interpretation of the verse is: Say, O Muḥammad, to the delegation of the Christians of Najrān: if you are as you claim, that you love Allah, and that you exalt the Masīḥ and say about him what you say, out of love on your part for your Lord – then realize your statement which you utter, if you are truthful, by following me, for you know that I am a Messenger of Allah to you, just as ʿĪsā was a Messenger to those to whom he was sent. For indeed – if you follow me and believe me in what I have brought you from Allah – He will forgive you your sins, and He will remit for you the punishment for that, and forgive you what has passed of it. For He is Forgiving toward the sins of His believing servants, Merciful toward them and toward others of His creatures.
