The statement concerning the explanation of His saying: إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لآيَاتٍ لأُولِي الأَلْبَابِ (190) ("Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and in the alternation of night and day there are signs for those who possess understanding" (3:190)).
Abū Jaʿfar said: This is an argument from Allah — exalted be His remembrance — against the one who said that, and against the rest of the creatures, that He is the One who governs and disposes of affairs and who subjects to service whatever He wills; and that enriching and impoverishing belong to Him and lie in His hand. He — exalted be His praise — therefore said: Reflect, O people, and take instruction from it. For in what I have brought into being and created of the heavens and the earth for your sustenance, your food, and your sources of livelihood, and in what I have made to follow one upon the other of night and day, so that I cause them to alternate and succeed one another for your benefit — you go about in this one (the day) for your sustenance, and you rest in this one (the night) for the repose of your bodies — in that there is something from which to take instruction and to remember, and in that there are signs and admonitions. So whoever among you possesses understanding and discernment knows that whoever attributes poverty to Me while I am rich is a liar and a slanderer. For all of that lies in My hand: I turn it and dispose of it, and were I to remove it, you would perish. How then can poverty be ascribed to the One in whose hand and with whom is everything that belongs to existence in the heavens and the earth? Or how can he be rich whose sustenance lies in the hand of another, who provides for him when He wills and withholds from him when He wills? So take instruction, O you who possess understanding.
