    Explanation of the words of Allah: يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (171) ("They rejoice at a favor from Allah and a bounty, and that Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste." (3:171))

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: "they rejoice (yastabshirūna)," that is: they are gladdened — "at a favor from Allah," that is: by that with which He — exalted is His remembrance — bestows upon them of magnificent honor upon their arrival before Him — "and a bounty," He says: and by that which He has lavished upon them of favor and abundant reward for what has preceded from them of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and of struggle against His enemies — "and that Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste," as in:

    8232 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Abū Isḥāq: "they rejoice at a favor from Allah and a bounty," the verse — when they beheld with their own eyes how what was promised was fulfilled and how great the reward was.

    The reciters differ over the reading of His words: "and that Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste (wa-anna llāha lā yuḍīʿu...)".

    Some recited this with a fatḥa on the alif of "anna," with the meaning: they rejoice at a favor from Allah and a bounty, and at the fact that Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste.

    * * *

    = And others with a kasra on the alif ("inna"), as a new beginning (istiʾnāf). The one who recited it thus argued that in the reading of ʿAbdallāh (Ibn Masʿūd) it reads: "and a bounty, and Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste (wa-faḍlin wa-llāhu lā yuḍīʿu ajra l-muʾminīn)." They said: this is a proof that His words "and that Allah" form a new beginning, not connected with what precedes.

    * * *

    The meaning of His words "He does not let the reward of the believers go to waste" is: He does not nullify the recompense for the works of whoever held His Messenger to be true, followed him, and acted according to what came to him from Allah.

    * * *

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The most correct of the two readings is the reading of the one who recites this as "and that Allah (wa-anna llāha)" with a fatḥa on the alif, because of the consensus of the authoritative reciters concerning it.

    القول في تأويل قوله : يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (171) قال أبو جعفر: يقول جل ثناؤه: " يستبشرون "، يفرحون =" بنعمة من الله "، يعني بما حباهم به تعالى ذكره من عظيم كرامته عند ورودهم عليه =" وفضل " يقول: وبما أسبغ عليهم من الفضل وجزيل الثواب على ما سلف منهم من طاعة الله ورسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم وجهاد أعدائه =" وأن الله لا يضيع أجر المؤمنين "، كما:- 8232- حدثنا ابن حميد قال، حدثنا سلمة، عن أبي إسحاق: " يستبشرون بنعمة من الله وفضل " الآية، لما عاينوا من وفاء الموعود وعظيم الثواب. (48) * * * واختلفت القرأة في قراءة قوله: " وأن الله لا يضيع أجر المؤمنين ". فقرأ ذلك بعضهم بفتح " الألف " من " أنّ" بمعنى: يستبشرون بنعمة من الله وفضل، وبأنّ الله لا يضيع أجر المؤمنين. * * * = وبكسر " الألف "، على الاستئناف. واحتج من قرأ ذلك كذلك بأنها في قراءة عبدالله: ( وَفَضْلٍ وَاللَّهُ لا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ). قالوا: فذلك دليل على أن قوله: " وإن الله " مستأنف غير متصل بالأول. (49) . * * * ومعنى قوله: " لا يضيع أجر المؤمنين "، لا يبطل جزاء أعمال من صدّق رسوله واتبعه، وعمل بما جاءه من عند الله. * * * قال أبو جعفر: وأولى القراءتين بالصواب، قراءه من قرأ ذلك: " وأن الله " بفتح " الألف "، لإجماع الحجة من القرأة على ذلك. ------------------ الهوامش : (48) الأثر: 8232- سيرة ابن هشام 3: 126 ، وهو تتمة الآثار التي آخرها: 8229.
