The discourse on the exegesis of His statement: فَآتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ ثَوَابَ الدُّنْيَا وَحُسْنَ ثَوَابِ الآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ (3:148) (And Allah gave them the reward of this world and the most excellent reward of the Hereafter, and Allah loves those who do good.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: By this He means, exalted is His mention: Allah gave to those whom He described with that which He described concerning them—namely, patience in obedience to Allah after the killing of their prophets, and in the struggle against their enemy, and the seeking of help from Allah in their affairs, and the following of the ways of their leader in that with which they tested themselves for Allah—"the reward of this world" (thawāb al-dunyā), that is to say: a recompense in this world, and that is: the victory over their enemy and the enemy of Allah, and the triumph, and the conquest which He bestowed upon them, and the establishment of their position in the lands. "And the most excellent reward of the Hereafter" means: and the best recompense of the Hereafter for what they sent ahead in this world of their good works, and that is: the Garden (janna) and its felicity, as in:
7994 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: وَمَا كَانَ قَوْلَهُمْ إِلا أَنْ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا (And their word was nothing but that they said: Our Lord, forgive us our sins), and he recited until he reached: "and Allah loves those who do good," that is to say: by Allah, Allah granted them the conquest and the upper hand and the establishment and the victory over their enemy in this world. "And the most excellent reward of the Hereafter," he says: the most excellent reward in the Hereafter, which is the Garden.
7995 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, concerning His statement: وَمَا كَانَ قَوْلَهُمْ (And their word was nothing...), and he then mentioned something similar.
7996 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning His statement: "Allah gave them the reward of this world," he said: the victory and the spoils of war (ghanīma). "And the most excellent reward of the Hereafter," he said: the good pleasure of Allah and His mercy.
7997 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: "Allah gave them the reward of this world," the upper hand over their enemy. "And the most excellent reward of the Hereafter," the Garden and what is prepared therein. And His statement: "and Allah loves those who do good," He says, exalted is His mention: Allah did that with them because of their doing good, for He loves those who do good, and they are those who act as He described concerning them that they acted when their prophet was killed.
