The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: يَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ (29:54) (They ask you to hasten the punishment, while Hell (jahannam) truly encompasses the disbelievers.)
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: These polytheists (mushrikīn) ask you, O Muḥammad, to hasten the coming of the punishment (ʿadhāb) and its descent upon them, while the Fire (al-nār) already encompasses them; there remains nothing but that they enter it. And it has been said: that is the sea.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us, saying: Shuʿba related to us, on the authority of Simāk, who said: I heard ʿIkrima say concerning this verse وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ (while Hell truly encompasses the disbelievers): he said: The sea.
Ibn Wakīʿ informed us, saying: Ghundar related to us, on the authority of Shuʿba, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima, the like of it.
