Tabari

Tafseer of The Spider · Al-Ankaboot · 29:47

And thus We have sent down to you the Qur'an. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.

The explanation of the words of the Exalted: وَكَذَلِكَ أَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ فَالَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَمِنْ هَؤُلاءِ مَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِهِ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلا الْكَافِرُونَ ("And thus have We sent down the Book to you; so those to whom We have given the Book believe in it, and among these there are those who believe in it; and none denies Our signs except the unbelievers") (29:47).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: just as We sent down the Books upon those before you, O Muḥammad, among the messengers, كَذلكَ أنـزلْنَا إلَيْكَ ("thus have We sent down to you") this الكِتابَ فالَّذِينَ آتَيْناهُمُ الكِتابَ ("Book; so those to whom We have given the Book") before you, from among the Children of Israel, يُؤْمِنُون بِهِ وَمِنْ هَؤُلاءِ مَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِهِ ("believe in it, and among these there are those who believe in it"). He says: and among these who are present today in your midst, there are those who believe in it, such as ʿAbdallāh ibn Salām and whoever of the Children of Israel believed in His messenger.

And His words: وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلا الْكَافِرُونَ ("and none denies Our signs except the unbelievers"). The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and none denies Our indications and Our proofs except the one who repudiates Our favors to him and denies Our oneness and Our lordship, while he knows it, out of recalcitrance toward Us.

As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلا الْكَافِرُونَ ("and none denies Our signs except the unbelievers"), he said: denial occurs only after knowledge.
