The explanation of the words of the Exalted: وَقَارُونَ وَفِرْعَوْنَ وَهَامَانَ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مُوسَى بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ وَمَا كَانُوا سَابِقِينَ (39) ("And [We destroyed] Qārūn, Pharaoh, and Hāmān; and indeed, Mūsā came to them with the clear proofs, but they showed themselves arrogant in the land, and they could not escape Us") (29:39).
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and remember, O Muḥammad, Qārūn, Pharaoh, and Hāmān; and indeed, Mūsā came to all of them with the clear proofs, that is, with the manifest signs; ( فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الأرْضِ ) ("they showed themselves arrogant in the land") and arrogantly refused to believe in the signs and to follow Mūsā — may the blessings of Allah be upon him. ( وَمَا كَانُوا سَابِقِينَ ) ("and they could not escape Us"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and they could not, by themselves, slip away so as to escape Us; rather, We had power over them.
