Tabari

Tafseer of The Stories · Al-Qasas · 28:72

Say, "Have you considered: if Allah should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allah could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?"

The explanation of His saying, the Exalted: (Say: Have you considered: if Allah were to make the day continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you a night in which you might rest? Do you then not see?) (72).

The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says to His Prophet Muhammad — Allah's peace and blessings be upon him —: قُلْ (Say), O Muhammad, to the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people: أَرَأَيْتُمْ (Have you considered), O you people, إِنْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ النَّهَارَ سَرْمَدًا (if Allah were to make the day continuous for you), perpetual, without any night ever accompanying it, إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ مَنْ إِلَهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ (until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah), what object of worship other than the Worshipped One to whom the worship of all things is due, يَأْتِيكُمْ بِلَيْلٍ تَسْكُنُونَ فِيهِ (could bring you a night in which you might rest), so that you may find repose in it and come to tranquility; أَفَلا تُبْصِرُونَ (Do you then not see), He says: do you then not see with your eyes the alternation of night and day over you — a mercy from Allah for you, and a proof from Him against you — so that by it you may know that worship is due only to the One who has bestowed these favors upon you through it and to none other, and to the One who possesses the power by which He has made a distinction between those two.
