The word of Allah, the Exalted: وَاسْتَكْبَرَ هُوَ وَجُنُودُهُ فِي الأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْنَا لا يُرْجَعُونَ (39)
Allah, the Exalted, says: وَاسْتَكْبَرَ — Pharaoh وَجُنُودُهُ — in the land of Egypt, out of arrogance against believing in Mūsā and following him in what he called them to — namely, the oneness of Allah and the acknowledgment of servitude (al-ʿubūdiyya) to Him — بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ — that is: through transgression and arrogance towards their Lord. وَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْنَا لا يُرْجَعُونَ — that is: they supposed that after their death they would not be resurrected, and that there would be no reward and no punishment. Thus they followed their desires and did not know that Allah was watching over them and that He would requite them for their corrupt deeds.
