Tafseer of The Poets · Ash-Shu'araa · 26:86
And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
وَاغْفِرْ لأبِي (And forgive my father) — he says: and overlook my father's polytheism toward You, and do not punish him for it. إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ (Indeed, he was among those who went astray) — he says: he was among those who strayed from the path of right guidance and became unbelieving toward You.
We have already explained earlier the reason why Ibrāhīm — may the prayers of Allah be upon him — asked forgiveness for his father, as well as the scholars' disagreements about it, and what in our view is the correct opinion; that discussion is sufficient and need not be repeated here.
