وَٱغْفِرْ لِأَبِىٓ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

    وَاغْفِرْ لأبِي (And forgive my father) — he says: and overlook my father's polytheism toward You, and do not punish him for it. إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ (Indeed, he was among those who went astray) — he says: he was among those who strayed from the path of right guidance and became unbelieving toward You.

    We have already explained earlier the reason why Ibrāhīm — may the prayers of Allah be upon him — asked forgiveness for his father, as well as the scholars' disagreements about it, and what in our view is the correct opinion; that discussion is sufficient and need not be repeated here.

    ( وَاغْفِرْ لأبِي ) يقول: واصفح لأبي عن شركه بك, ولا تعاقبه عليه ( إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ ) يقول: إنه كان ممن ضل عن سبيل الهدى, فكفر بك. وقد بيَّنا المعنى الذي من أجله استغفر إبراهيم لأبيه صلوات الله عليه, واختلاف أهل العلم في ذلك, والصواب عندنا من القول فيه فيما مضى, بما أغنى عن إعادته في هذا الموضع.
