And that they say what they do not do? -

As Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd said: A man said to my father: "O Abā Usāma! What do you say concerning the word of Allah, exalted is His praise: وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ * أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ * وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَN?" My father said to him: "This is only for the poets of the polytheists (mushrikīn), not for the poets of the believers. Do you not see that Allah says: إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِN... and so forth?" The man said: "You have enlightened me, O Abā Usāma; may Allah enlighten you."
